“Peace does not mean an absence of conflicts; differences will always be there. Peace means solving these differences through peaceful means; through dialogue, education, knowledge; and through humane ways.” ~ Dalai Lama XIV

Volunteers’ Week 2019

The national Volunteers’ Week 2019 is fast approaching: 1-7 June. Volunteers’ Week is a time to say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make. During the week, hundreds of events and celebrations take place across the country, saying thank you to volunteers and recognising their invaluable and diverse contribution to the UK.

We have teamed up with local groups and organisations to celebrate the amazing volunteering activity we have in Milton Keynes. We will be running volunteering drop-ins and pop-up activities across MK and sharing spotlight-stories of various organisations in Milton Keynes offering volunteering opportunities and case studies of some of the exiting volunteers. Please follow our blog and social media (#volunteerMK) to find out more.

The People's Assembly Against Austerity

Dear Friend,

Protests will take place on the day of Trump’s state visit engagements - and we hope to flood the capital with hundreds of thousands of protesters.

When Donald Trump visited the UK for a working visit last year, an estimated 250,000 people took to the streets to oppose him. The People's Assembly are proud, once again, to help organise and mobilise for Trump's State Visit on 3-5 June.

We are calling on all our supporters to gather on 4 June from 11am in Trafalgar Square

Activists plan to ‘follow Trump’ by marching from Trafalgar Square to nearby locations depending on the details of Trump’s itinerary for the day.

Themed areas will feature throughout the protest with climate justice, migrants’ rights, racism and misogyny among them. So get your homemade placards at the ready!

A new poll shows a million Londoners are in favour of the Trump protests and half of London residents oppose Trump's visit.

So, let's make sure we give him a proper unwelcome!

How you can help build the demonstration:

Download and print the leaflet, hand them out in your local area, workplace, local cafes, shops and bars. Share the Facebook event and invite your friends to attend. Keep checking the Together Against Trump for updates on itinerary and transport and share the information.

Can you help?

The People's Assembly is a grassroots organisation which is supported by many trade unions, campaigns and local networks, as well as many individuals. But we need your help. It costs money to organise events, meetings, demonstrations and campaigns. Unlike those who are enforcing austerity, we do not have wealthy businessmen backers. We rely on donations from our supporters. Over the past few months we have organised or supported campaigns over the NHS, closure of libraries, housing and in support of trade union rights. We held a demonstration in early January calling for a general election.

We need to step up our campaigning and help give a voice to those trying to stop library closures, end Universal Credit, defend the NHS and provide a better future for our children.

Please consider supporting The People's Assembly with a one off or monthly donation.

Thank you!!

Get involved in this one off volunteering project for Buckingham Canal Society. You will have a chance to be part of a team helping to restore part of a canal bridge or you may be helping to improve part of the tow-path at Cosgrove. This gets very muddy in winter and is almost impossible to walk along so the work is to help disabled people enjoy the canal more and also be of great assistance to other walker and boaters.

* If you would like to find out more about the volunteering day at Lock Lane with Buckingham Canal Society and to sign-up to take part, please e-mail or ring 01908 661217, or turn up on Thursday 6th June at 10.00 in Lock Lane, MK19 7JR.

Global Justice Now

Stopping the corporate plunder of people and planet

Saturday 8 June, 1pm-6pm

Birmingham and Midland Institute, 9 Margaret Street, Birmingham B3 3BS

With speakers including: Gyekye Tanoh, Third World Network Africa • Pia Eberhardt, Corporate Europe Observatory • Nick Dearden, Global Justice Now

All welcome. Book your free place at

From chlorinated chicken to Trump’s trade wars, trade has been all over the news in the last year. Yet this is hardly the first time trade has been controversial. Trade and investment deals have always been a way for the powerful to accumulate their wealth and power. And for decades global social movements have been fighting them – with some major wins along the way.

Far from being about mutually beneficial exchange between people, modern trade deals threaten our public services with privatisation, facilitate environmental destruction and undermine democratic decision-making. On 8 June, join international campaigners to discuss the fight against corporate power in the context of climate change, Brexit and growing global inequality.

Sessions will include:

Trade, corporate power and global inequality • Corporate courts: Understanding and beating ISDS • How the West steals Africa’s wealth • Climate justice and the global economy • How UK aid funds education privatisation • Trading with Trump: A Brexit nightmare

For members of Global Justice Now the event is preceded by the 2019 Annual GeneralMeeting.
